UPS Trucks and Finding Peace: lessons from my unexpected teacher

Feb 16, 2025
Before we dive in, I’d like to introduce you to my business partner, Biscuit. (We sometimes call him Busy Biz around here.) He’s a long-haired Chihuahua with a gift for napping, a talent for finding the perfect sunbeam, and a calm, Zen-like energy… most of the time.

Until the UPS truck pulls up.

Suddenly, Biz transforms into a flurry of barks, ready to defend us from the terrors of delivery with all the determination his little body can muster. He’s 100% focused on the moment—nothing else exists but the truck and his mission.

And then it’s over. The truck drives away, and Biz lets it go. No fretting over the next delivery, no replaying the moment wondering how he could have lived it differently. He simply crawls back into my lap and resumes his nap, perfectly content.

What if we could be more like Biz? Meet our worries as they arise, give them the attention they need, and then release them—returning to our own sunny spots of peace.

Need a Quick Win?

When your worries start to bubble up, try this simple practice:

  • Pause.
  • Take a slow breath in, feeling your lungs expand.
  • Say to yourself: Every pause creates space for clarity.

What’s Brightening My February

  • Book: Frog and Toad Are Doing Their Best: Bedtime Stories for Trying Times by Jennie Egerdie. A hilarious, nostalgic parody of my favorite childhood duo. Frog and Toad are navigating Wi-Fi, self-care, and existential dread, and I am here for it.
  • Song: Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles – All I have to say is: George knew.
  • Tea: Yogi Peach Bergamot Bright Day. Sunshine in a cup, perfect for chasing away winter mornings.

Inside Compassionate Rebels

This month, the Compassionate Rebels community is all about Befriending Your Inner Critic. One of my favorite moments around this topic came recently during a conversation with a client about failure.

They shared how they’d often thought, ā€œI am a failure.ā€ But when they reframed that to ā€œI failed,ā€ something shifted. Suddenly, failure wasn’t an identity—it was just a moment in time. And with that shift came room to grow.

That’s what Compassionate Rebels is all about: challenging the narratives that hold us back, creating space for growth, and finding peace with ourselves along the way.

If this sounds like the kind of journey you’re ready for, we’d love to have you with us. Compassionate Rebels Enrollment is open until February 28, so there’s still time to join—or invite a friend to share in the journey.

Paws & Ponder with Biscuit šŸ¾

  • What’s one story you have been telling yourself that you could reframe? (ex: "I am a failure.")
  • How might you turn it from a label into a moment—and then into an opportunity? (ex: "I failed - here's what I learned.")

Bonus points if you find a sunny spot to sit in while you think about it.  šŸ˜‰

PS: Remember, be like Biscuit: bark when it matters, pause when you can, and always make time for naps.

Heart Forward,
Casey (and Biscuit)

Out of My Comfort Zone (And Loving It): How Self-Compassion Turned Me Into a Risk-Taker
Hi Friend! So, a little insight in to Casey: I am a planner. I love knowing where I’m going, what I’m doing, and—if we’re being honest—where I’ll find the best tacos along the way. So, when an invitation came (last minute!) to join a friend on a weeklong tour and Connection Practice training in Costa Rica, my inner planner blinked in disbelief. And then said, Wait. You’re doing what? Here’s the...
A Spark of Light in the Depths of Winter
Ā  Hello Friend, January is a funny little month, isn’t it? The holiday glitter has settled, the days are cold and dark (at least for us Northern Hemisphere dwellers), and the noise of resolutions is everywhere, shouting about how you should be better, faster, stronger. Let’s hit pause on all that. Instead of chasing "better," what if we leaned into enough? You, as you are, in this...
Reflect, Renew, and Reimagine
Hello Friend! As December settles in, we find ourselves in a season of contrasts. There’s celebration, but also nostalgia. Connection, but sometimes loneliness. For many of us in the Northern Hemisphere, these shorter days bring not just cooler weather but a longing for light—both outside and within. This is a tender time of year. A time to be gentle with ourselves and each other. While there’s...
